BANGKOK, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Thai cabinet approved the proposal from the government of the Republic of Iraq to establish its embassy in Thailand, government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said on Tuesday.

She said this marks a significant step in upgrading bilateral relations as Iraq has consistently expressed its intention to reopen its embassy in Thailand following improved domestic stability.

The move also coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Iraq, she added.

The spokesperson said that the opening of the Iraqi embassy in Thailand will enhance coordination between the two countries and unlock opportunities to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, particularly in energy, trade and investment, as well as tourism.

Ratchada also said that the new embassy will strengthen Thailand's strategic standing in the Middle East and boost its capacity to provide more efficient consular assistance to Iraqi nationals. ■
