Shared path toward modernization: Ethiopia’s Chief Whip on localized strategies and collaboration with China

China’s remarkable achievements in sustainable development goals, especially in poverty reduction, climate change response, and building a resilient economy, serve as a source of inspiration for developing nations, including Ethiopia. Tesfaye Belijge Dara, Chief Government Whip at the Ethiopian House of People's Representatives, emphasized that Ethiopia has drawn valuable lessons from China’s approach, which integrates policy with the country’s unique cultural and historical context. As one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, Ethiopia shares similarities with China and sees great potential in further collaboration to enhance the well-being of its people.

Reflecting on China’s development miracle over the past four to five decades, Tesfaye noted that China’s policies are rooted in its indigenous knowledge and national identity, providing a model for other countries. Ethiopia, too, is crafting its own path with philosophies like "medemer," which promote inclusiveness, cultural values, and cooperation. This shared focus on localized problem-solving highlights the importance of adopting policies that align with a nation’s specific needs while fostering partnerships for mutual growth.

The long-standing relationship between Ethiopia and China, based on trust, solidarity, and shared learning, is a testament to the power of cooperation. From peacekeeping in the Horn of Africa to combating global challenges like terrorism and climate change, the two nations have worked closely on international issues. Tesfaye believes that these collaborative efforts, particularly the initiatives introduced by China’s leadership, significantly contribute to South-South and global cooperation, offering a valuable framework for other nations to follow.
