In an interview with Guangming Online, Peter Katjavivi, Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia, emphasized the long-standing and evolving relationship between Namibia and China, which dates back to Namibia's liberation struggle. He highlighted China's vital support in Namibia's fight for independence and expressed confidence that the diplomatic ties between the two countries would continue to grow stronger. Katjavivi noted that both nations share common interests and challenges, particularly in global affairs, and are committed to contributing to international peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
Katjavivi also reflected on the transformative development of China, having witnessed the remarkable changes in the country since his first visit in the 1960s. He praised the hard work and determination of the Chinese people, which he believes offers valuable lessons for Namibia as it seeks to modernize its own economy. Drawing on China's development model, he stressed the importance of learning from its success to drive Namibia's growth and progress.
Namibia's abundant natural resources, such as oil, gas, and green hydrogen, present significant opportunities for economic development. However, Katjavivi emphasized the need to move beyond the informal extraction of raw materials and focus on building local capacity. By fostering skills and creating industries that benefit ordinary Namibians, Namibia can ensure that its natural resources contribute to sustainable economic growth and improve the livelihoods of its people.
