CPC101: Hong Kong's Return to the Motherland

At midnight of July 1, 1997, the national flag of the People’s Republic of China and the flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region were raised at the handover ceremony, and the Chinese government resumed its exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong. The development of Hong Kong has since embarked on a new journey.

After reunification with the motherland, Hong Kong, as a Special Administrative Region directly under the Central Government, was incorporated into the national governance system. The Central Government governs Hong Kong in accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law of Hong Kong SAR, and the administrative and legal systems of Hong Kong were established accordingly.

Since returning to the motherland, Hong Kong’s ties with the Mainland have become closer and closer. While governing Hong Kong in accordance with the law, following the strategic needs to maintain long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, China has been actively supporting Hong Kong’s economic development and the improvement of people’s livelihood. A number of policies have been introduced to enhance economic complementarity, win-win cooperation, and shared development of the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Entering a new era, the CPC Central Committee has fully and accurately implemented the “One Country, Two Systems” policy. Leveraging the Central Government’s full authority over Hong Kong, under the Constitution and the Basic Law, China has deepened exchanges and cooperation between the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao, writing a new and successful chapter of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy.
