Exploring the Estuary: Following the Sounds of Chinese White Dolphins

BEIJING — At the Guangdong Pearl River Estuary Chinese White Dolphin National Nature Reserve, researchers leverage advanced technologies to better understand and protect Chinese white dolphins, a national first-class protected species in China.

Supported by the FAO-GEF Demonstration of Estuarine Biodiversity Conservation, Restoration and Protected Area Networking in China, the reserve is exploring innovative approaches to biodiversity conservation in China’s estuarine ecosystems.

Through passive acoustic monitoring, AI-powered image recognition, and integrated environmental data analysis, researchers are uncovering where dolphins appear, how they move, and how their activities change over time.

In this episode, Chen Xi, Section Chief of the Pearl River Estuary Chinese White Dolphin National Nature Reserve Administration, and Wang Kexiong, Researcher at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduce how science and technology are providing new approaches for Chinese white dolphin conservation.
