On January 1, 1933, the Japanese army launched a large-scale assault on Shanhaiguan Pass. Chinese forces resisted fiercely, marking the beginning of the Defence of the Great Wall.​

On January 26, 1933, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) issued instructions to the CPC Manchuria Provincial Committee, proposing the strategy of organizing a national anti-Japanese united front in Northeast China.
