Representatives from international development organizations in China, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as representatives from Japan and Germany's international development agencies and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in China, visited Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to examine the results of poverty alleviation efforts and beautiful countryside construction, November 7, 2024.
Pengshui is a targeted assistance recipient of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission. This visit was jointly organized by the Central Foreign Affairs Office and the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA). Luo Zhaohui, head of CIDCA, noted that rural revitalization is a key area of focus and a major national strategy that President Xi Jinping has consistently prioritized. It aligns closely with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Under this strategic guidance, Pengshui, as an ethnic minority autonomous county, has successfully eradicated poverty and embarked on the construction of beautiful countryside initiatives. The purpose of this visit by representatives of international development organizations in China was to understand Pengshui’s achievements in poverty alleviation and its rural revitalization plans, mobilize and utilize resources from all parties, and jointly participate in the process of building beautiful countryside.
The representatives participating in the visit highly praised Pengshui's development achievements and expressed great enthusiasm for contributing to the beautiful countryside initiative. Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China, remarked that Pengshui's achievements in infrastructure and industrial development are impressive and represent a successful example of China's efforts in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization. The UN development system is committed to leveraging its technical, financial, and channel advantages to further support Pengshui's development and share China's development experiences globally through South-South cooperation. Representatives from other international organizations also expressed their willingness to utilize their expertise and global influence to explore targeted cooperation in areas such as tourism, modern agriculture, education, and healthcare, tailored to Pengshui's unique characteristics and developmental needs.
