“As a Party member, I feel I have the responsibility to engage continuously in seeking new breakthroughs for China’s track and field”.
Before leaving for the Tokyo Olympics in June this year, Su Bingtian, a Chinese sprinter who had been a Party member for 11 years and also an associate professor of Jinan University, said in an interview with the media as a 32-year-old veteran sprinter.
No one expected China’s breakthrough in track and field, but on the evening of August 1, Su Bingtian set a new Asian record in the men’s 100-meter dash with a time of 9.83 seconds at the Tokyo Olympics semifinals, making him the first ever Chinese sprinter to enter the finals of the 100-meter event in track and field, and also the only non-American runner among the top 15 men’s 100-meter sprinters in the world.
During the Tokyo Olympics, the calmness, self-confidence, individuality and pursuit of the Olympic spirit displayed by Chinese athletes represented by Su Bingtian became the best footnote to the image of Chinese youth in the New Era.
