He is a foreigner who spent almost his entire life in China, he is a witness to the great changes in China in the 20th century. His name is Israel Epstein.
Epstein was born in Poland and moved to China with his parents when he was two years old. Since then, he had forged an indissoluble bond with China. After becoming a journalist at the age of 15, he had committed himself to reporting what he saw and heard in China to the world. He wrote many news reports and monographs reflecting the Chinese revolution, construction, and reform, and deepened the understanding and friendship between China and the rest of the world.
With sincere feelings for China and the Chinese people, Epstein became a Chinese citizen in 1957. In 1964, he joined the Communist Party of China.
Spending 82 of his 90 years in China, Epstein witnessed the great changes of China during the 20th century. On Epstein’s tombstone are these touching words: “I love China and the Chinese people. China is my home. It is this love that has tied my personal life to the destiny of China.” — Beijing.
