[Overview] Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain as well as the country's political, financial and transportation center. It is the highest capital city in Europe at an altitude of 670 meters, located on Meseta Central in the center of the Iberian Peninsula at the southernmost tip of the European continent. The city covers an area of 1,020 square kilometers and has a population of about 6.5 million.

[Politics] The administrative body of Madrid is the municipal government. The municipal government is composed of one mayor, one secretary to the mayor and a governing board consisting of nine members. The mayor and members of the governing board are directly elected by the citizens. The governing board meets at least once a week to discuss and decide on important matters of the city. There are nine departments under the municipal government, and each of the nine members of the governing board is in charge of one department. There are 21 districts under the jurisdiction of Madrid. Each district has its own leadership and is directly elected by the citizens. The incumbent Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, took office in June 2019 for a four-year term.

[Economy] The Community of Madrid, where the City of Madrid is located, is the center of Spain's transportation, logistics, R&D, consumption and high-tech industries. It is the second largest industrial center in Spain after Barcelona, and the fifth largest financial center in Europe after London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

The pillar industries of Madrid are construction, services, transportation, communications, financial intermediaries, and trade. It has a well-developed service sector, including consulting, computer science, research and development, quality inspection, and design industries. Madrid is Spain's railway, highway, and air transportation hub. The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is the fourth largest airport in Europe.

[Culture and Education] Madrid is a cultural city, with more than 1,900 historic monuments. There are 11 universities, 36 ancient art museums, more than 100 museums, over 100 sculpture groups, 18 libraries and more than 1,200 bookstores in the city. The Madrid Book Fair is held in May every year and its exhibitors include important publishers from all over the world. The headquarters of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is also located in Madrid. The two most famous football teams of the city are Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid.

[Relations with Beijing] On September 16, 1985, Beijing and Madrid officially became sister cities. Since then, they have maintained good official ties and engaged in productive cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism and sports. In September 2011, the two cities signed a framework agreement on friendly cooperation in Madrid.

People-to-people and Cultural Exchanges: In July 2005, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sisterhood between Beijing and Madrid, the two cities jointly organized a series of cultural and sports activities, including a friendly match between Real Madrid and Beijing Xiandai and flamenco dance.

Olympics: In August 2008, at the invitation of Beijing, a delegation led by then Mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón visited Beijing to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Tourism: In February 2016, Madrid joined the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) established on the initiative of Beijing.

【政治】马德里市行政管理执行机构为市政府。马市设市长1人、市政府秘书长1人，市政全会委员9人。市长及市政全会委员由市民直接选举产生，市政全会每周举行至少1次会议讨论决定全市重要事宜。市政府下设9个局，市政全会9名委员分别担任局长主管具体业务。马德里市下辖21个区，每个区有自己的领导机构，由市民直接选举产生。现任市长何塞·路易斯·马丁内斯-阿尔梅达于2019年6月就职，任期4年。

【经济】马德里市所在的马德里自治区是西班牙运输、物流、研发、消费和高新技术产业的中心，是继巴塞罗那之后，西班牙第二大工业中心，也是继伦敦、巴黎、法兰克福和阿姆斯特丹之后的欧洲第五大金融中心。

马市支柱产业有建筑业、服务业、交通、通信、金融中介、贸易等，其中服务业发达，能提供包括咨询、计算机科学、研发、质检、设计等在内的综合服务。马市是西班牙铁路、公路和航空交通的枢纽，其苏亚雷斯-巴拉哈斯国际机场是欧洲第四大机场。

【文化教育】马德里市是一座文化名城，有1900多个古迹建筑。马市有11所大学，36个古代艺术博物馆、100多个博物馆、100多个雕塑群、18家图书馆和1200多家书店。马德里每年5月都会举办书展，世界各地的重要出版商都会参展。此外，马德里市是世界旅游组织总部所在地。最著名的两支球队是皇家马德里队和马德里竞技队。

【两市交往】1985年9月16日，北京市与马德里市正式建立友好城市关系。结好以来，我市与西班牙马德里市保持着良好的官方交往，在文化、旅游、体育领域开展了卓有成效的合作。2011年9月，两市在马德里市共同签署了《北京市与马德里市友好合作框架协议》。

人文交流：2005年7月，为庆祝北京与马德里建立友好城市关系20周年，两市共同举办了一系列文化、体育活动，主要包括西班牙皇家马德里足球队与北京现代足球队友谊赛、西班牙弗拉明戈舞表演等。

奥运交流：2008年8月，应我市邀请，马德里市市长加利亚东率马德里市代表团来京出席北京奥运会开幕式。

旅游合作：2016年2月，马德里市加入由我市发起成立的世界旅游城市联合会。
